Professor Frances Wall, Camborne School of Mines, takes a closer look at the Otobong Nkanga exhibition

For December’s A Closer Look, Frances Wall, Professor of Applied Mineralogy at Camborne School of Mines, will be linking her research in mineralogy and responsible mining to the Otobong Nkanga exhibition.

Frances currently leads international research councils on how best, in the most environmentally and socially responsible ways, we obtain the raw materials we need for the renewable energy technologies needed to combat climate change. She was named one of the ‘100 global inspirational women in mining 2016’.

Frances has a degree in geochemistry and a PhD from the University of London, and worked as an analyst and petrologist at the Natural History Museum in London before joining Camborne School of Mines in 2007. Frances has visited mines and exploration projects in Namibia, Malawi, Rwanda, Finland, Russia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Brazil and South Africa, as well as being closely connected to mining-related businesses in Cornwall and Devon.

Frances was Head of Camborne School of Mines from 2008-2013, President of the Mineralogical Society from 2014 -2015 and President of the Cornish Institute of Engineers 2019-2020.
