Experience the vivid, reflective works of leading Kazakh artist

Gulnur Mukazhanova is a Kazakh artist, renowned for her highly expressive use of felt in both wall-based works and large-scale installations.  This exhibition is the first UK museum survey that brings together works from her existing series, such as Moment of the Present, Bosaga (Threshold), and Portrait-Reflections (on the history of my homeland, Qandy Qantar 2022, 2022–). Mukazhanova will also present a new site-responsive work created especially for the exhibition.

Based in Berlin, Mukazhanova was born shortly before the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Her work is influenced by Kazakh textile traditions that are rooted in nomadic cultures, with felt as her most important material. Much of her work addresses the friction between a rapidly globalising world and enduring traditions and values.
