Join us in STUDIO DO to play with new soft and sensory sculptures created by artist duo WABKIN this summer.
Commissioned as part of our Teylu at Tate programme, artists Frances Daykin and Huhtamaki Wab have collaborated to make new fabric sculptures for our holiday programme. Play with these sensory creations and take part in large-scale mark making, with collaborative drawing games and prompts provided by WABKIN.
Daykin and Wab’s work draws inspiration from animism, folk traditions and non-anthropocentric worlds. The sculptures were made using repurposed and recycled materials from Plymouth Scrap Store and are designed to be touched, leant on, embraced and played with.
As part of the project, the artists worked with our local audiences in creative junk sessions to co-design and imagine the different ways in which functional objects could become mythical creatures.
WABKIN
Frances Daykin and Huhtamaki Wab are WABKIN. With backgrounds encompassing play-work, support-work, creative facilitation, art education and visually based artistic practice, WABKIN situates itself as a multiplicity. A re-weaving of traditional hierarchical values within the art world is reflected through their work at the Plymouth Scrapstore.
Our holiday studio programme creates immersive installations and play-based activities that offer self-directed art experiences for children, parents and carers. Each STUDIO DO responds to the themes and broader art movements of our exhibitions or invites a contemporary artist to take over the space. This provides a space to test out making, experiment with ideas, and take time out from the galleries. Make, play, rest and use the studio in your own way to explore art at Tate St Ives.
