Description

Full text in translation:

'Dear Friend,
The whole America is mourning, rightly so, the mood suffers, so I have done nothing today. I visited a few galleries, at Valentine, Leger, the nudes from the 20th century with Matisse, at Durant Ruel the nudes from Renoir and Degas, Claude Monet at Wildenstein. I even visited an exhibition about the [illegible word ] Francaise from the 16th and 17th century at the Metropolitain Museum. I've also been to an exhibition for the sale of the most absurd collection but that the style must be common in here, with the so called 'honest painting' with the likes of Bouguereau [William Adolphe], Cabanel [Alexandre], Diez [probably Carlos Cruz] and Fortuny [Maria].
[illegible word] of the world where I still found a vivid Rousseau [Henri] and a charming Corot [Jean-Baptiste-Camille], both lost amongst this avalanche of mediocrity, that we call honest, it doesn't excuse anything. As you can see it was a well spent afternoon, full and successful. From the nudes to the pastels of late Degas they are stunning. Let's not talk about the engraving, from Jean Duvet to the others, it is splendid!
I wished I'd had this walk with you, but I thought of you instead. What are you doing? It's been a while since I've had some news from you. What happened to your collection? Have you shared the large Ingres? Talk to me in length about it all. I sent a large package for you and [illegible sentence due to water damage].
All my best wishes, your Lipchitz'.
