This is a diagram of the installation in the back room of the Park Place Gallery, New York, in February 1966 done to coincide with David Novros' exhibition of paintings in the main room. Novros invited Carl Andre to make an installation because he wanted to control what works other than his own would be shown.

'Reef was first made with the styrofoam beams originally used to make 'Crib', 'Coin' and 'Compound' (1965-2,-3,-4) for Andre's exhibition at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery in 1965. 'Reef' was made, in his own words, 'as a deliberate destructuralization of architectonic properties in my work'. Because of lack of space the original beams had to be destroyed when the Park Place installation was dismantled. The work was later reconstructed first for the Whitney Museum's Anti-Illusion exhibition in 1969 and later for Andre's exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in 1970, but by 1969 white styrofoam beams were no longer available and orange ones had to be substituted for them. The reconstruction (1966-16) now belongs to Count Panza di Biumo at Varese.

David Novros held exhibitions at the Park Place Gallery in February 1966 and April 1967, and Andre was at first under the impression that 'Reef' was made for the latter. However he wrote on 8 November 1977 that Novros had indicated to him that it was made for the 1966 show. 'The drawing (just a plan really) was done after the fact.'
