Jacques-Emile Blanche: His Art and his Collection, Leicester Galleries, London, May-June 1939 (1) as 'Matinée d'août, plage de Dieppe'
Previously catalogued simply as 'Beach Scene, Dieppe', this picture has a label on the bottom left-hand corner of the glass with the number 1, which makes it almost certain that it was exhibited at the Leicester Galleries in 1939 as catalogue no.1 'August Morning, Dieppe Beach'. It appears to have been painted about the same time as a larger beach scene dated 1934 which was included in the Blanche exhibition at the Leicester Galleries in October-November 1969 (26, repr. in colour); the two pictures are very similar in handling and colour, and even in their effects of clouds and light.
