Display caption
It was on visits to north Yorkshire in the years 1803-5 that Cotman developed his highly individual style as a watercolourist. Some of his finest work was based on studies made in Duncombe Park, Helmlsey. He only took up oil painting, however, in 1806 and never returned to Yorkshire, so this small painting of trees must have been made away from the spot if the traditional title is correct.
