Inscribed ‘J. Cristall—1830—’ b.l. on old mount.
Watercolour and pencil, 9 15/16 x 8 9/16 (25.3 x 21.8).
Purchased at Christie’s out of funds donated by Mrs Winifred May Weaver 1974.
Coll:….; Francis Llewellyn Jenks, sold Christie’s 30 January 1974 (58), bt. Colnaghi for the Tate Gallery.
Exh: ? Society of Painters in Water Colours, 1831 (346,‘A Pastoral Subject with Shepherds conversing’).
The verso of the mount is inscribed: ‘this memorial of her kind friend Joshua Cristall for my niece. Fanny. 1847.’ Both the author of the inscription and ‘Fanny’ have yet to be identified.
