Display caption
In this painting a couple sit in silence next to their marital bed, unable to communicate after a row. The man bites the handle of his walking stick in frustration. The woman gazes stonily ahead and twists a handkerchief to control her anger.Thomas Faed was a Scottish artist who specialised in genre scenes based on Highland subjects. The man here is thought to be a self-portrait.
