The artist said that the watercolour 'A Married Couple' belongs to a series of drawings and watercolours which he executed during the 'twenties up to 1930. He worked on a kind of portfolio entitled Natural History of the German Middle Class, for which he also wrote a text. Political events, however, interrupted his plans; he went to the United States and this portfolio was never finished.
A preliminary pencil study 57 x 44cm, showing the same two figures on the pavement against a background of shops, was sold at Sotheby's on 1 December 1969, lot 89 repr.
