Lord David Cecil (b. 1902) has been Goldsmiths' Professor of English Literature in Oxford since 1948.
John made no preliminary sketch for this portrait although he made drawings of Lord David Cecil after this picture was painted. An unfinished portrait of the same sitter also dating from 1935 was sold at Christie's, 20 July 1962 (170, repr.).
