N05802 CHLOë BOUGHTON-LEIGH

Not inscribed.
Canvas, 28×20 (71×51).
Purchased from Roland, Browse and Delbanco (Knapping Fund) 1947.
Coll: Probably among the paintings left by the sitter to her cousin Mrs Molloy. Acquired by Mr Toobey of Reading, who sold it to Roland, Browse and Delbanco as a Gwen John.

Acquired as a self-portrait of Gwen John but obviously bears no resemblance to N05366. Mrs Dorelia John, who saw a photograph of the picture, wrote (14 August 1952): ‘The photograph you sent me is not a self-portrait of Gwen John and in the opinion of Mr John and myself is not by her.’ Some fairly similar paintings were owned by Mrs Molloy, who believes this to be a portrait of Chloë Boughton-Leigh (letter of 20 May 1957). As she looks older than in the portrait of her by Gwen John (N04088) the picture may have been painted some time after 1907.
