A typical late work, executed when Mauve was living in the village of Laren near Hilversum. The records of the Goupil Gallery at The Hague list a number of watercolours with such titles as 'Sheep re-entering' or 'Return of the Flock', some of which were sold to the London branch of the Goupil Gallery or to British collectors like James Staats Forbes, but it has not been possible to identify this particular work. The original backboard had an inscription 'April 10/97' which seems to show that it was in this country by 1897, and also a label of William Marchant & Co., Goupil Gallery, London, which would refer to a date after mid-August 1901, when the London branch was taken over by this firm.
