Wilkie purchased 'The Hunter's Moon' in 1956, and this was the painting which started his collection. His ambition at that time was to collect works on the theme of the seasons. Accordingly he bought this painting, which was painted in autumn 1955, and after that he acquired three other paintings by Nicholson evoking different times of the year. This group included Nicholson's 'Recollect' which is also displayed here. Of 'The Hunter's Moon' Nicholson wrote: 'The turn of the season from Autumn to Winter is always a time of adventure to me - a call out into the mountains and forests of unknown things: contrasted with the secure shelter of lamplight, home and one's books'.
