T00309 IRIS (?)1913

Inscr. ‘O Conor. ’03' or ‘’13' (? - the date practically illegible) t.l.
Canvas, 24×19 3/4 (61×50).
Presented by the Contemporary Art Society 1959.
Coll: C.A.S., purchased 1916.
Exh: (?) Salon d'Automne, Paris, 1913 (1597), as ‘Iris’.
Lit: Sutton in Studio, CLX, 1960, p.196.

An inscription on the stretcher, possibly by the artist, reading ‘No 5. Iris’, suggests that the painting may be that exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1913, though O'Conor exhibited many still lifes under general titles and the date on the painting may be '93,'03 or '13; the first is, however, unlikely as the painting does not reflect the impact of the Pont Aven circle so directly as does such a work as the ‘Still Life with Bottles’ of 1892 (T00133). While the painting belonged to the C.A.S. it was known as ‘Irises’.
