Technique and condition
This sculpture is a bronze cast on a stone base. From the shape of the tool marks visible on the bronze it is possible that the bronze cast was taken from a clay model and the plaster cast reworked with files and rifflers. The lost wax bronze cast has a dark brown chemical patina and a black wax coating. The integral base is a rectangular piece of stratified limestone. The bronze cast is fixed onto the base by a threaded rod with a bolt situated in a recess underneath the base. The assembled sculpture is unstable because the base is very narrow.
The structural condition of the sculpture is good. The bronze and the stone base has been surface cleaned. The corrosion has been reduced and waxed. The worn patina has been toned in with a dark wax.
