Arthur Studd's single one-man exhibition during his lifetime was held at the Alpine Club Gallery, London, in June 1911. Of the sixty paintings in the exhibition, at least twenty were views of Venice; even the catalogue cover was decorated with the reproduction of a swift pen sketch of the church of Santa Maria della Salute. No biographical details were offered in the catalogue so it is not possible to be precise about the date of Studd's working visit to Venice. Some of the works exhibited were entitled with the view they represented eg. ‘Riva della Salute’ whereas eight were shown under the generic term ‘Venetian Lyric’ followed by the first eight letters of the alphabet, A-H. Neither T03645 nor T03646 has an Alpine Club Gallery label which could securely link them to this exhibition, but T03646 has a paper label with the number 51, and 51 in the Alpine Club Gallery exhibition was entitled ‘Venetian Lyrics B (The Low Line of Light)’
The Tate Gallery acquired ‘A Venetian Lyric’, N03275 in 1918, a similar small oil on panel, and this was believed to have been shown in the June 1911 Alpine Club Gallery exhibition under the title ‘A Temple of Vulcan’. It was given the tentative date of (?) 1900–10.
