Catalogue entry

This scene of trees above dark water, with what may be a pale castle above and hills beyond, has been tentatively suggested by Eric Shanes as an Italian, Scottish or Welsh subject; he has also compared it with Tate D25333 (Turner Bequest CCLXIII 211),1 which has a similar red foreground, although the pale brown forms in the distance there appear more irregular and mountainous that architectural.
Other views in this section with distant towers or castles among hills include Tate D25267, D25335, D25351, D25359 and D25377 (Turner Bequest CCLXIII 145, 213, 229, 237, 254)
