Catalogue entry

With the page turned vertically, there are two slight sketches here. At the top is a landscape with trees or clouds, apparently with figures in the foreground; the accompanying notes are hard to make out. Compare the scenes on folio 10 verso opposite (D18008).
Separated by a horizontal pencil line, below is a slightly less hasty drawing of the east end of a small church with a broad, squat tower and a shallow spire, which is possibly St Michael’s, Shalfleet, six or seven miles south-west of Cowes, near the north coast of the Isle of Wight; the spire has since been taken down.1 For more on studies in this sketchbook relating to the regatta events at Cowes from late July 1827 onwards, see the sketchbook Introduction.
