The drawing was made with the page turned horizontally; its inscription may refer, as Finberg suggested, to Penegoes, near Machynlleth,1 Powys (Montgomery), although the hills depicted are too high. A more likely place is Penegroes on the road from Criccieth to Caernarvon, in the valley of the Nantlle. The ‘X’ is inscribed above a sizeable building or ruin on a ridge of the mountain.
