Catalogue entry

As recognised by Robert Upstone, this very slight sketch depicts Baden, of which there are various views in this sketchbook. Like folios 15 verso and 63 (D04668, D04720), it was presumably a first impression jotted down as Turner approached from Zurich (see especially folio 11 verso, D04660), taking in Castle Stein on its crag and the old town in the valley of the River Limmat below. For Castle Stein, see folios 58 and 59 (D04715, D04716). Perhaps the following year, 1803, Turner worked up these views in a colour study (Tate D04899; Turner Bequest LXXX F).
