Catalogue entry

The drawing is continued on folio 2 recto opposite (D01678; Turner Bequest XLII 3). Other views of Caerphilly in this book are on folios 3 recto and 31 verso–32 recto (D01680, D01737–D01738; Turner Bequest XLII 5, 62–63). Turner also studied the castle in his 1798 Cyfarthfa sketchbook (Tate D01636, D01637, D01639; Turner Bequest XLI 8, 9, 10a).
In Turner’s time the late thirteenth-century castle was an overgrown ruin, having been largely in desuetude since the mid fourteenth century. For further details see under D01636.
