Catalogue entry

The subject seems to be Chudleigh Rocks, an outcrop just south-west of Chudleigh, east of Dartmoor between Ashburton and Exeter. For Ashburton see the Devon Rivers, No.2 sketchbook (Tate D09729; Turner Bequest CXXXIII 49a), where there are also views of Exeter (Tate D09755, D09756; Turner Bequest CXXXIII 65a, 66). Turner’s viewpoint appears to be the valley south of the rocks. There is another drawing of the same site on folio 4 recto (D09485), while the wooded valley on folio 3 recto (D09484) and the bridge on folio 5 recto (D09486) may be nearby.
Technical notes:
There is some staining which has bled through from the leather overlaps inside the front cover.
Verso:
Blank
