In this rather slight study, inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the straight lines below the central figures probably indicate a small boat, as shown in the similar drawing on the verso (D22456), where the setting may be the south bank of the River Thames at Putney. There are also variations on folio 71 verso (D22460). For other views along the Thames between the bridges at Hammersmith and Putney, see under folio 58 verso (D22434). There are separate small studies at the top left and right, including a woman apparently carrying a small child.
