Catalogue entry

Turner made a number of sketches in and around Loreto, a city approximately fourteen miles south of Ancona, see folio 10 (D14671). This page contains a view of the city from the south with Monte Conero and the Adriatic Sea along the horizon in the background. The sketch clearly shows how the historical centre of the city neatly occupies the contours of the hill onto which it is built.1 Dominating the skyline is the dome and campanile of the Santuario della Casa, with the tower of the Palazzo Comunale on the left.
