Catalogue entry

After visiting the city of Loreto, Turner’s route took him south-west towards Recanati, a small hill town approximately three miles away. The flat horizon line of the Adriatic Sea and the dome just visible on the hill in the background identify these two sketches as distant views of Loreto from the road just outside Recanati. The uppermost drawing appears to show a roadside altar, a common feature in Italy.
