Catalogue entry

The subject is close to that of two drawings in John Robert Cozens’s (1752–1797) Beckford Sketchbook I, pp.30 and 31, titled ‘Near Terracina’ and ‘Part of Terracina’ and dated 5 July 1782 (Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, D1975.4.31, 1975.4.32).1
Another ‘Monro School’ view at Terracina is in the companion Monro album (Tate D36472; Turner Bequest CCCLXXIII 59). A Beaumont tracing after Cozens of the same scene is no.77(B) (Yale Center for British Art, New Haven).
