With the page turned vertically, the following sum appears at the top left in ink:
These figures provide a total for those set out in the accounts including the date 21 July 1813 on folio 14 recto opposite (
D08305). They appear to have been written over extensive, undated pencil notes, also made with the page turned. Of these, four lines are written in a relatively large and firm script at the top, followed by nine lines in a smaller and fainter hand. Only occasional letters can be made out, giving no overall sense. The lower passage concludes with one further line on the opposite page.
The figure ‘1600’ appears again on folios 8 verso and 14 verso (
D08296,
D08306). ‘4406’, appears again as £4406 eight shillings and ten pence of Navy stocks on folios 12 verso, 13 recto and 14 verso (
D08302,
D08303,
D08306) and in the
Hastings sketchbook (Tate
D07670; Turner Bequest CXI 49). For more on Turner’s finances as set out in the extensive notes in this sketchbook, see the Introduction.
