This is a view of the Bohemian capital Prague, taken from an elevated viewpoint at the Belvedere palace near Prague Castle. The spires, towers and domes of the Old Town’s many churches can be seen, among them St Francis’ Church at right and the Old Town Square with St Nicholas’ Church and the Old Town Hall.
Turner produced several sketches of Prague on the 1835 tour; other drawings in this sketchbook can be found at Tate D30344–D30361, D30364–D30366; Turner Bequest CCCI 25–33a, 36–37.
