Catalogue entry

Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, at the top left is a view of the Roman ruins at Richborough Castle near Sandwich, which continues across folio 39 verso opposite (D35826; Turner Bequest CCCLXIII 38a) with a prospect across the River Stour towards Pegwell Bay and Ramsgate on the Kent coast to the north-east. For other Richborough views, see under folio 7 recto (D35769).
Also other way up is a study of boats under sail, presumably along the river or along the nearby coast.
