Swiftly wrought, these sketches show the frontier town of Givet dominated by the Fort Charlemont (they continue on the opposite folio Tate D19667; Turner Bequest CCXVI 59). The Pont de Meuse and Tour Victoire can be seen in the upper and lowermost sketches.
Further views of Givet and its fortress are found on Tate D19664–D19665, D19668–D19671; Turner Bequest 57a–58, 59a–61; for later drawings dating from 1839 see Tate D28170–D28185, D28187; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVIII 2a–10, 11.
