Catalogue entry

The focal point for this sketch is the Basilica of Pozzano, a church also known as the Santuario della Madonna di Pozzano which is located on the Pozzano Hill, part of the Sorrentine peninsula, south-west of Castellammare di Stabia (formerly Castellamare). The church, with its distinctive square campanile, is believed to be named after the historic discovery by some fishermen of a painting of the Virgin hidden in a well. Turner’s viewpoint is from the west and visible in the distance is the town and bay of Castellammare. Further views can be seen on folios 38 verso and 61 (D15810 and D15849).
