Catalogue entry

The landscape sketch in the top left-hand corner depicts the view looking towards the Pincian Hill with the Casino di Raffaello, a summer-house near the grounds of the Villa Borghese, see folio 44 verso (D16233; Turner Bequest CLXXXVIII 43a). Similar views can be found on folio 47 verso (D16239; Turner Bequest CLXXXVIII 46a), and in the Rome: C. Studies sketchbook (see Tate D16344; Turner Bequest CLXXXIX 18). Meanwhile, the sketch of trees on the right belong to the gardens outside that casino, continued from a sketch on a previous page, see folio 45 (D16234; Turner Bequest CLXXXVIII 44). Turner has half-folded the paper of the previous sheet back in order to extend the breath of the view onto the paper available beneath.
The architectural detail annotated with colour notes is unidentified.
