Display caption
In 1826 John and Arthur Arch advertised a publication to be called 'THE ENGLISH CHANNEL, or LA MANCHE, to consist of views taken by [Turner] from Dunkirk to Ushant, and places adjacent'. This view of Brighton may have been made in conjunction with the scheme. The subject echoes an oil painting by John Constable of the Chain Pier which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1827.
