Catalogue entry

As Turner’s written inscription on this page indicates, these two sketches depict Fiesole, a town amidst the hills to the north-east of Florence, famous for its panoramic views overlooking the city and the surrounding countryside. Both vistas look south-west in the direction of Florence, and the upper study includes the winding course of the River Mugnone. For a fuller description and further studies from Fiesole see folio 30 verso (D16542).
