With the 2007 Turner Prize awarded to Mark Wallinger on Monday 3 December at Tate Liverpool, Young Tate have now launched their own Alternative Turner Prize for young people aged 13-25, giving them the opportunity to submit their own artworks inspired by this year’s Turner Prize. 10 shortlisted entries will be displayed at Tate Liverpool and on the Young Tate page of the Tate website (www.tate.org.uk/youngtate) for public voting from 24 – 29 January 2008. The winner will be announced at the end of January.
Young people are invited to submit an artwork, in any medium, that is inspired by the four shortlisted Turner Prize artists: Zarina Bhimji, Nathan Coley, Mike Nelson and Mark Wallinger. To help the inspiration flow, Young Tate suggest “thinking about what you would like to happen next, continue the story and put a twist on it. Push your creativity to its limit and use materials imaginatively. Consider how the Turner Prize artists’ work has been made. Try to reflect this in your choice of materials”.
The Turner Prize 2007 exhibition, which runs at Tate Liverpool until 13 January 2008, is free, so drop-in for inspiration.
To help the judging panel of Young Tate members and Tate Liverpool curators make their assessments, budding artists should take note of the following criteria: 2D works should be no larger than an A2 piece of paper. 3D artworks (sculpture) should be no bigger than 35cm (width) 25cm (height) and 25cm (depth). If the artwork is a film piece it should last no more than 5 minutes. This competition is specifically for people aged 13-25; children under 16 must obtain parental permission. If your work is short listed you will be responsible for transporting or posting the original art work to the gallery. Bear this in mind when choosing what materials to use. Having fun whilst creating your masterpiece is compulsory!
Judges will be looking for artistic expression, originality and evidence of research into the four nominated Turner Prize artists. To enter, photograph your artwork and save as a jpeg file, complete a submission form and then e-mail your form, and up to 3 images, to youngtate@tate.org.uk. We accept file sizes up to 20MB. All entries must be received by 8 January 2008.
The Alternative Turner Prize has been created by Young Tate: a vibrant and enthusiastic band of art activists aged 13-25. Young Tate at Tate Liverpool meet regularly to manage dynamic youth projects for the gallery. They have been running for over 10 years, constantly creating new and unusual events such as Hell Night in 2006 and Peter Blake’s Beach Party in the summer of 2007. They have also worked collaboratively with artists such as Jake and Dinos Chapman. Young Tate is always looking for new recruits.
