This exhibition at The Atkinson brings Gilbert (b. 1943) & George's (b. 1942) art to audiences in the North West for the first time in over 30 years. Drawing together works from the 1970s to the 1990s, ARTIST ROOMS Gilbert & George traces how they mobilise humour, their own image and the everyday to interrogate social conventions, identity and belonging. From The Nature of Our Looking 1970 to EXISTERS 1984 to LIGHT HEADED 1991, works in this exhibition show distinct moments in their experimentation, from the spare, performative language of their early work to the bold visual compositions of their later practice.
In a larger-than-life journey through the modern world as they see it, Gilbert & George's art is often provocative and challenging in its refusal to deliver simple messages about sex, religion, class, nationalism, crime and death.
The Atkinson is a vibrant arts and cultural centre in Southport, bringing together theatre, visual art, museum collections and exhibitions within its beautifully refurbished 19th-century building. Its galleries present historic collections alongside contemporary art and changing exhibitions, connecting local heritage with diverse artistic practices.
