Grundy Art Gallery Exhibition

ARTIST ROOMS Roy Lichtenstein

13 July – 7 September 2019

Roy Lichtenstein, Reflections on Girl 1990. ARTIST ROOMS Tate and National Galleries of Scotland. Lent by The Roy Lichtenstein Foundation Collection 2015. © Estate of Roy Lichtenstein/DACS 2025.

Explore the work of a pioneer of pop art

The bold, graphic style of Roy Lichtenstein's work is immediately recognisable and his influence still widely seen today. Creating often monumentally sized paintings using his signature hand-painted dots, mimicking the Ben-Day dot aesthetics of comic books and commercial newsprint, his work became synonymous with the pervasive and accelerating effects of popular mass culture at the time.

The exhibition at Grundy Art Gallery presents the work of a pioneer of the pop art movement that exploded in the 1960's, his influence is still widely seen today. On display are a number of works on loan from the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation to ARTIST ROOMS alongside major loans from both institutions.

The ARTIST ROOMS programme of exhibitions with partner museums and galleries enables access to modern and contemporary art of international significance in rural areas, small towns and major cities throughout the UK.

Exhibitions are happening throughout 2019 and into 2020 in venues large and small, the length and breadth of the country, from Dundee to The Isle of Wight.

Works from the ARTIST ROOMS collection can also be seen at Tate sites in London, Liverpool and St Ives as well as at National Galleries of Scotland sites in Edinburgh.
