Tate Britain Talk

Other wise Sara Mackillop and David Blamey in conversation with Duncan Wooldridge

Join us to celebrate the launch of Other Wise, a new series of artists' publications, with Sara Mackillop, David Blamey and Duncan Wooldridge

MacKillop and Blamey have produced the first two publications in a sequence of twelve projects responding to Open Editions' invitation to create a new work within the space of twelve large format printed pages. The reader/viewer is encouraged to approach these approximately 16 square feet of folded paper space with a spirit of adventure. MacKillop's Paper clip (Other Wise 01) and Blamey's Demo yellow (Other Wise 02), convey their ideas as images rather than words, and the artists ask their audience to make their own interpretations, or even use their reading experience as a springboard for thinking about something beyond what is being observed.

A public discussion will be convened by Duncan Wooldridge with MacKillop and Blamey, to explore artists' books, photobooks and other forms of publishing in current art practice.

The event will feature a display of MacKillop and Blamey's publications in Tate's collection, and a site-specific installation of works by both artists within the context of its library setting.

Tate Library is a centre of excellence for art historical research, with holdings of over half a million publications on British art since 1500, and international art since 1900, including 12,000 artists’ books, serials and zines, and 14,000 photobooks.

Sara MacKillop

Sara MacKillop is an artist based in London. Her work has been shown extensively including solo exhibitions at Roland Ross (2026), Florence Loewy (2022), PEER (2019), Haus der Kunst (2015), Spike Island (2011), White Columns (2011), Trondheim Konstmuseum (2011), Dundee Contemporary Art (2010). She has published over 30 artist’s books.

David Blamey

David Blamey is a London-based artist and founder of the imprint Open Editions. His work encompasses several activities (including exhibiting, curating and publishing) which overlap to form a multidimensional practice positioned within a range of public situations, both inside and beyond the art gallery.

Since 1992, Open Editions operates as an independent publishing platform for creative collaborations between artists, designers, academics, writers, curators and critics. An ethos of experimentation and equality underpins its work: theory and practice are combined and artists and writers exchange ideas on a level playing field.

Duncan Wooldridge

Duncan Wooldridge is an artist, writer and curator. He is Reader in Photography in the School of Digital Arts, Manchester School of Art. He is the co-founder with Robin Tarbet of object | multiple, and a co-founder of the Global Photographies Network. He is the author of To Be Determined: Photography and the Future (SPBH/Mack, 2021), editor of Written Down / Written Up: The Selected Writings of John Hilliard (Mack, 2026) and co-editor of Photobook Conversations (1000 Words, 2025).
