Jane McCall, Bloomsbury Revisited

Led by artist Jane McCall from Bloomsbury Revisited, join this lampshade painting workshop inspired by the work of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant

Join artist Jane McCall for a one-day workshop celebrating the bold decorative vision of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant. Inspired by the artists' approach to colour, pattern, and painted interiors, this workshop invites you to transform a handmade lampshade into a unique work of art.

Beginning with an introduction to the exhibition, you will explore the distinctive visual language of Bell and Grant, exploring their use of composition, light, colour, and ornament. Back in the studio, Jane will guide you through a series of creative exercises before demonstrating techniques for painting directly onto a handmade lampshade using chalk paints.

You will be encouraged to experiment, develop your own ideas, and enjoy the creative process in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Suitable for all levels of experience, this workshop offers the opportunity to discover new techniques, gain fresh creative inspiration, and leave with a beautifully hand-painted lampshade that reflects your own artistic vision.

All materials are provided. We recommend bringing an apron or wearing clothing suitable for painting.

10.30 – Meet at the Clore Studio

10.40 – Introduction to Jane McCall’s work and lampshade painting as well as an introduction to Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant and the work of the Bloomsbury Group at Charleston

11.00 – Visit the exhibition Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant: Inside Bloomsbury to gather inspiration and references for the workshop

11.45 – Return to the Clore Studio and begin mark making and painting practice techniques

12.45 – Begin building the designs and patterns directly onto lampshades

13.30 - Break

14.15 - Continue painting and complete lampshade designs, followed by group appreciation session and drying time

15.00 - Session ends

Jane McCall and her business partner, Jane Howard, founded Bloomsbury Revisited in 2020. What began as a passion project, inspired by their shared love of Charleston Farmhouse, has grown into a distinctive interiors brand celebrating colour, creativity, and craftsmanship.

Inspired by the bold and imaginative spirit of Charleston's celebrated residents, Bloomsbury Revisited creates beautifully crafted lampshades, lamp bases, wallpapers, and textiles that reflect artistic freedom and individuality.

Alongside her work with Bloomsbury Revisited, Jane is an accomplished potter and artist. She has led creative workshops at Charleston, Dulwich Picture Gallery, and the Courtauld Gallery. Her designs are stocked by leading interiors retailers, including Liberty of London.
