The exhibition is structured chronologically, focusing on the cut-out works created by the artist, from the late 1930s to Matisse's death in 1954, which served as an alternative to painting, overcoming the limitations caused by his ill health. The cut-outs began as a composition tool used by him to resolve layout and compositional issues. As time progressed the cut-outs became works in their own right.
