Join Abraham Cruzvillegas and artists Amalia Pica, Giles Bailey and designer Michael Marriott for an evening of improvisation filled with art, music, play and conversations. Echoing the unpredictable nature of the Hyundai Commission 2015: Abraham Cruzvillegas: Empty Lot sculpture, you are invited to actively explore ideas of chance, change and hope through playful constructions and associations of words, colours and symbolic gestures.
The evening's format and content is inspired by the happenings of the Fluxus artist Robert Filliou and John Cage's Music of Changes, which uses the classic Chinese text I-Ching to inform its composition. We will play music made in collaboration with bands from places including Glasgow, Paris, NY, Lima, Mexico City and Minneapolis.
Biographies
Abraham Cruzvillegas
Abraham Cruzvillegas (Mexico city, 1968) is an active member of the Intergalactic Taoist-Tai-Chi-Society. In 2015, besides Tate’s Turbine Hall commission, he had solo shows at Gdańska Galeria Miejska, Poland, at MALI, Lima, Peru, and at ArtSonje Center in Seoul, South Korea, and this year his collected writing will be published by Harvard University Press, under the title The Logic of Disorder.
Giles Bailey
Giles Bailey’s work makes use of texts, video fragments and choreographies to rethink conventional approaches to the assemblage and recounting of history. Solo exhibitions and performances have been hosted variously by Kunsthalle Basel, The Hepworth Wakefield, and The Chisenhale Gallery, London.
Michael Marriott
Michael Marriott is a designer, who trained in furniture but often works in other related areas, such as exhibition design, interior or product design.
Amalia Pica
Argentinian born artist Amalia Pica lives and works in London. In 2016 Pica will present a solo exhibition at Kunstverein Freiburg, Germany. Her other solo shows include Van Abbemuseum, Amsterdam (2014), and Modern Art Oxford, Oxford (2012).
