Speaking Through Movement Set and Reset

Part of the Terra Foundation for American Art Series: New Perspectives

15 March 2022 at 18.30–20.00
A black and white photo captures three dancers in mid-movement. One dancer is holding another in the air, at hip height, while the third curves around them following the group's movement. All three stand on a stage wearing flowing clothes.

Join us for a panel discussion about Trisha Brown’s 1983 dance Set and Reset

This panel provides an opportunity to reflect on how a museum can collect, present and activate dance history. It coincides with live performances of Set and Reset as part of the festival Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels.

The panel includes Benoit Swan Pouffer, Rambert’s Artistic Director, Carolyn Lucas Associate Artistic Director of Trisha Brown Dance Company, Joel Brown dancer, singer-songwriter and is chaired by Catherine Wood.

Speaking Through Movement: Set and Reset is part of How does art speak? A series of four conversations centered around North American artists who explore the many ways art communicates with us.

Benoit Swan Pouffer is Rambert’s Artistic Director and an internationally-renowned choreographer. He was a principal dancer with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Artistic Director of Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet. He has choreographed for feature films, music videos, Broadway shows and stage works for companies around the world.

Carolyn Lucas is Associate Artistic Director of Trisha Brown Dance Company. She attended North Carolina School of the Arts and graduated with a BFA in dance from SUNY Purchase before joining Trisha Brown Dance Company in 1984. Lucas originated roles in some of Brown’s most acclaimed works including Lateral Pass (1983), Carmen (1986), Newark (Niweweorce) (1987), Astral Convertible (1989), Foray Forêt (1990) and Astral Converted (1991).

Catherine Wood is Senior Curator of International Art (Performance) at Tate.

Joel Brown is an American paraplegic dancer and singer-songwriter. He’s performed with California-based AXIS Dance Company from 2012-2014 and London’s Candoco Dance Company from 2015 to present. Joel received a Snowdon Master’s Scholarship and is currently studying an MA in choreography at Central School of Ballet.
