Tate has a fantastic team of committed volunteers involved in a variety of roles across our galleries, from Visitor Experience to the Library and Archive teams. Our volunteers contribute to making Tate a friendly, dynamic, and accessible place for all, in line with its vision to serve as an artistically adventurous and culturally inclusive art museum for the UK and the world.
Volunteering in London
Visitor Experience Volunteers London
Volunteers at Tate Modern and Tate Britain are primarily involved in two front of house roles: Visitor Hosts and Guides.
Our Visitor Hosts provide a warm welcome and promote Tate’s exhibitions, tours, talks, activities and events to our visitors so they can make the most out of their visit to Tate. The minimum commitment is 6 hours a month.
Our Guides deliver research, prepare and deliver 45-minute tours on a variety of themes, guiding visitors through the displays at Tate Britain and Tate Modern with a focus on making tours engaging and accessible.
Alongside our collection tours some guides also deliver Family Tours, African Heritage theme or LGBTQIA+ theme tours.
The minimum commitment is 3 to 6 hours onsite a month, this does not include research and preparation time.
Library and Archive London
Volunteers at Tate Library and Archive support the preservation and care of Tate’s exceptional library and archive collections.
They help to make our extensive collections accessible to researchers and members of the public via the Reading Rooms at Tate Britain.
Our volunteers undertake a variety of roles including sorting and filing ephemera and press cuttings, repackaging and rehousing fragile books and photographs, and numbering archival objects.
How to get involved at London sites
Volunteer opportunities are open to anyone over 18 with the right to volunteer in the UK. At present, we are not recruiting for volunteers and usually only do this through local partner organisations. For those interested in joining a waiting list for volunteering in London, please email volunteer@tate.org.uk. Please be aware there is a long wait time as we only recruit ocassionally. The minimum commitment to volunteering is two years and we prioritise applications from those based locally.
Volunteering in St Ives
Volunteers at Tate St Ives start off being involved within the Visitor Experience team. Regardless of background we welcome those who have an interest in the arts heritage of St Ives and who will love to give our Visitors a warm and friendly welcome. Once settled into the role there are opportunities to deliver 10 minute talks to Visitors about your favourite artwork and there may also be opportunities to progress into the Learning Team to offer support to children and their families with creative activities around the Gallery.
