Description

Tuesday 7th

Dear Aunt Annie!

I don’t know if we’re on first-name terms yet, but I shall call you Annie anyway!

From Munich I’ve just received the news that my old room is free. So I plan to come to Munich this Friday, the 10th (on the 9:32 passenger train), to put things in order, visit the happy couple and, if you have a minute for your nephew, perhaps speak to you again, too! Having been away for so long I’d forgotten how dear to me the old town is. I shall walk through its familiar streets singing: You, you’re so dear to me – I’m so madly glad to be here! To see the caretaker and his cat! The pigeons perched on the guttering over every door, waiting to whitewash my dark felt hat! The dogs who don’t lift a paw or turn a head to chase off the fleas that nip at their bellies! The dear townsfolk, so like those dogs, body and soul! And especially, Aunt Annie – though you’ll smile and call me a flatterer – I’m looking forward to seeing my aunts! How can I remain here another minute when such joys await? I’m kept here only by the hope that this cold will pass by Friday so I don’t infect my dear Munich. All’s well that ends well! The end is the aim! I’m freezing but cheering! Please come and meet me at the station!

Yours,

– – – – – Edl – – – – –
