Description

Munich, Tuesday

Dear Annerl!

Just a couple more lines before the post office closes: the room received me with open windows – so the air was fresh. I only had to hold my nose in the hallway. I snacked on Hungarian goulash and had a beer, then walked to the Storch. When I wanted to pay Degewop for it, he said: Oh, no! The Madame Baroness is so good to us! We’ll just put it on the tab! Then I went to Hanfstaengl’s shop to look for woodcuts. I didn’t find any, but I did happen upon some wonderful mackerel. Tomorrow morning I’ll take the key to Weber and do my chores, which are starting to stack up now.

Meanwhile I’ve also found a note from Charlie Bergfeldt, who’s apparently back from England. I’ll find out more about his fate in the next few days. My father’s Chinese colleague from Stuttgart has been here too. I’ll probably have to go and see him to make up for not having made it last time.

My mother wrote that she’d like to come but is waiting to hear more from me before she makes her plans. I received a letter from Aunt Kitty this evening. She writes that she’s just written to mama and has advised her not to spend the coming winter here. She’ll almost certainly postpone her visit for a year.

Everything looks great for Clifford and Ellen. They’re so utterly in love that nothing could bring them down.

Take it easy and come down soon. As it happens, our trips and so on were wonderful!

Edl
