Description

Munich, 20 August

Dear Annie!

Please let me know when you’re coming, and whether I should go ahead my plan to come to Schwaz without luggage and drive you back to Munich in the car. This would mean we could have it serviced ahead of the tour in September, I could keep studying the engine at the school, we could do some of the packing straight away and, last but not least, it might be very useful for you to have the car here, and I could then drive you back to the Tyrol again.

I blame myself for the fact that the summer wasn’t as relaxing and enjoyable for you as it ought to have been. When a foreign body enters the flesh, the flesh becomes inflamed and purulent, however harmless that foreign body might be. That’s just as true of the soul and society as it is of the body. And although that can’t excuse it, it may also explain my disagreeable, hyper-critical behaviour. That can only be excused if the joy and relaxation of the summer can somehow be compensated. And they shall be! On the true scales of life, trust and understanding outweigh manners and criticism, and the sincerity of an emotion is worth more than all the knowledge in the world.

Clifford whispers to me that he has nothing but love and longing and adoration for his Ellen. Has Ellen ever told you what she thinks of Clifford?

Yours,

Etl
