Description

Sunday

My dearest Annerl!

Your expedited letter arrived early this morning. I’m so looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday evening. May I prepare a little soup for us here at ‘our place’? Hopefully you won’t have to be at the Rupés too early! It’s a shame we didn’t know you’d be coming to Munich on the 25th, and without Fritz, instead of thinking he’d be coming to Schwaz at the end of the week. It would have been nice to drive you here!

My money has at last been sent to the USA – after negotiations with five departments and a long but victorious battle with the tax office. It was a struggle, but I also came away with permission to exchange all my money for foreign currency and to invest it as I wish. I never imagined it would be such a relief to have done with this matter. My old New England conscience was tormenting me, albeit almost entirely subconsciously, because I’d gone on holiday before meeting my obligations to those other people. Now I’m like a man reborn!

Please, please don’t ever be sad! You must never wish you were ‘frozen solid’! You mean more to me than any other creature on earth – because I love you more than anything, and I need you – because you’re my only ‘nourishment’ – for my work and for my pleasure, and for my whole understanding of life and the world.

Until Tuesday!

Yours
