Description

Monday

Dear Annerl!

Today I spent the afternoon between the Deutsche Bank and the American Express Co., and I’ve bought a thousand dollars in travellers cheques, so now I feel secure against anything that fate might have in store for me, like seasoning sprinkled into the pot. For the rest I’ll gladly take your advice and put it in a Swiss bank account.
Have you by any chance seen a brown envelope slightly bigger than this one lying around at Hügelhof? It contains my bank papers. I can’t find it here and I think I might have lost it in Schwaz. If it turns up, please bring it with you – though it’s not the end of the world if it doesn’t.

The Kaulas took me to see Pfitzner’s Palestrina. A marvellous play and brilliantly acted, a bulwark for the creative spirit. While we were there I happened to bump into some old friends from Harvard who I haven’t seen in three years. One of them dragged me off to the Rosenkavalier where we talked for hours and hours, late into the night. I’ll tell you more about him later – he’s quite an important chap.

Whenever I hear the gate creaking in the distance I immediately think I can hear your gentle footsteps on the gravel and straight away I want to jump up, throw open the door and hold my arms out to you. But they’re met with a cold gust of wind, and drops of rain blow into my face. On Tuesday, though, all will be well, and neither wind nor rain will dampen my joy.

Yours
