Description

7 February 1938

Dear Annerl!

Did you get my long letter, and when will you write to me? I really want to stay in touch with you all and I’m still far from losing hope of ever seeing you again. If you don’t come to America, then at some point in the next few years we’ll all come to Europe to visit you.

This isn’t a letter so much as a forewarning: I’ve applied for a doctorate in psychology at ‘Teachers College’ and had to give the names and addresses of all my previous ‘employers’ – among whom you are particularly prominent! Teachers College want to send all manner of forms to all the ‘employers’ listed, and these need to be filled out as honestly as possible in order to provide them with information about my character, my personality, my mental aptitude and so on. If this information were to contain kind or even flattering opinions about me, then my chances would be much improved, particularly when it comes to the ‘fellowships’ and ‘scholarships’ that I’m hoping to win. This forewarning shouldn’t be taken as a last-minute attempt to get a glowing recommendation from you (it was too late for that years ago – you know me too well!), I just wanted to assure you that the forms from Teachers College are quite important for me.

We all send the kindest regards and hope to hear from you soon.

Etl
